55 windsurfers started off the day by looking at a totally flat, sun bathed, lake in Gizycko with the wind speed averaging at around 3kts. Although the forecast was not optimistic everybody was prepared for the wait and the race committee was eager to start racing as soon as conditions improved. [more]
So we waited.
And waited.
Postponements were made with the AP flag over a number, which showed how many hours after the original warning signal the start would be. It was up to six when the PRO of the event Michal Jodlowski called everybody on the water.
The long wait paid off as we were able to have two races with the wind ranging from 5.5 to 10 kts on the racecourse. The championship is therefore valid with 5 races sailed.
Joao Rodrigues from Portugal and Anto La Balilla Gutierrez from Spain prevailed winning both of their races. Their opponents will have a chance to fight back tomorrow as 4 races are planned with a more promising forecast.
After racing today the sailors had a chance to visit the remarkable Boyen Fortress, which is one of the most interesting sites in Gizycko and the region, a place of unique historic import and great value for tourism. The building serves as a major example of the mid-19th century Prussian school of fortification and is one of the best-preserved monuments of 19th-century defence architecture in Poland.
